Senior Fitness

The main reason why older adults sometimes have difficulty performing certain daily activities (walking up and down stairs, loading the car, housework, etc...) is due to a gradual loss in muscle strength. Left unabated, this loss will eventually lead to a greater dependency on others and a poorer quality of life because of decreased mobility. But this loss of muscle is NOT an inevitable consequence of aging - it is a result of disuse!

Anyone, at any age, can increase his or her strength, improve balance, become more flexible, and enjoy an all-around healthier and happier lifestyle. A modest increase in muscle strength can improve quality of life and defy the frailty that USED TO BE considered a normal part of aging.

  1. Improve body composition - lose fat, increase lean muscle
  2. Increase metabolic rate - a faster resting metabolism is the result of more muscle tissue

Functional Movement, Balance, and Core Strength

Functional training is for everyone! Whether you are an athlete looking to improve your performance, a senior who wants to increase strength, improve balance, and move more efficiently, or a regular exerciser who needs a push to the next level while decreasing risk of injury - functional exercise involves training the whole body for the activities we perform every day.

"Functional" movements are multi-planar, multi-joint, weight bearing exercises that involve the core musculature (abdomen, lower back, gluteals, hips), often in unstable environments. A functional exercise program increases strength in the muscles that create movement and the core muscles that stabilize the body. Typical resistance training machines found in most gyms do not train the body in a functional manner because one muscle or muscle group is isolated while the body sits on a bench, stabilized. These exercises do not translate into real-world, daily activities such as lifting a grandchild off the floor and placing her on a high chair, or climbing stairs while carrying a bag of groceries. Functional training increases strength while improving muscular balance and joint stability, which prevents injuries and increases performance - for every day life and sports. Everyone can benefit from functional training.

Weight (Fat) Loss

Have you ever watched that show on TV called "The Biggest Loser"? If not, allow me to fill you in. The show features a group of severely overweight men and women who are sent to a private ranch with the goal of extreme, swift weight loss. The participants work out with personal trainers three-to-four hours a day while receiving nutritional advice from doctors and dieticians. Viewers watch as they crawl over brutal obstacle courses, sweat-it-out in the gym, and cry from pain or fatigue, or loss of motivation and hope.

Pounding your body into submission is not only ineffective for healthy, lasting weight loss, it creates a whole rash of problems. Extremes in exercise and diet fatigue the adrenal system, increase mental and physical stress, increase injury risk, disrupt hormonal balances, and cause overall fatigue and discomfort. While most exercisers and dieters won't go to this extreme on their own, many do use an over-ambitious approach that produces early results but that fizzle out quickly. A severe reduction in calories will slow the metabolism and trigger a starvation response in the body, which will preserve fat rather than metabolize it for fuel. Similarly, an extremely vigorous exercise routine will drag the body down and cause a weight loss plateau, possibly even weight gain.

So, put down the diet shake and step away from the fad diet book! Dieting, or calorie restriction by itself will not produce lasting weight loss. A sound combination of resistance exercise, cardiovascular training, and good nutrition will produce effective results for any weight loss goal. Don't let the magazines fool you - there is no such thing as a quick fix! I will help you shape your goals and together we will craft a plan with realistic timelines and measurable results. Weight loss is never easy, but with a partner in your efforts, the journey will be more fruitful and even, perhaps, more enjoyable.

Get on the trail to fitness and health! Life is a journey and the path to fitness and health is an adventure worth embarking upon. It shouldn't be drudgery; it shouldn't be painful. Enjoy the ride. Find something you enjoy. Take pleasure and pride in your own body and its unique strengths and abilities. Fitness is not exclusively for the athletic or those with naturally "gifted" physiques. Fitness and health can be achieved by anyone, at any age or stage of life.

As your personal trainer, I will provide you with motivation and support. I will extend a helping hand when you need it, or a gentle "kick in the rear" if that's what you require! I am just as accountable for your goals as you are. Our relationship goes beyond the workout. I am here to help you plan workouts together outside of our training sessions as well as to help you through challenging situations, such as a party that may derail your weight loss efforts or a business trip that will throw you off your workout schedule. As your trainer and coach, my goal is to keep you motivated to relentlessly work toward your goals. Together, we will witness the results of hard work and determination!
